Instead of the ‘selfie’ of vineyard designation, we believe the greatest value and expression of a winegrowing area is careful blending of vineyards and harvest dates. Our goal in crafting these wines is to source the highest quality fruit and to age and bottle our wines with a focus on allowing vintage and region to show clearly and deliciously. We invite you to navigate this website as Jeff Wilkes sailed the Pacific—note the cool breeze and the manifest beauty in every moment, in every sip. Our winemaker Wes Hagen is always available to answer your questions.

LISA STRID - WINEMAKER,  ARIDUS WINE COMPANY

Lisa Strid, a Wyoming native who fell in love with wine while working alongside her uncle on his small vineyard and winery in the wilds of western Washington. After a year of pruning, netting, crushing, and fermenting Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, she realized she wanted to make a career of the work, and entered Oregon State University to study enology and viticulture.

While in school, Lisa interned at Alexana Winery in Oregon’s Dundee Hills, where she learned the ins and outs of luxury, small-lot winemaking. She moved to California upon graduation to take a position at E&J Gallo Winery. At Gallo she worked on the Specialty Winemaking team. After nearly two years she transitioned to the role of Research Winemaker. In this position, she focused on innovative equipment use, new technology validation trials, and the exploration of process-driven changes to target different wine styles.

Lisa joined the Aridus team in June of 2016, just in time to help scale up production to over 100 tons. She enjoys working with the small team of dedicated individuals, learning the intricacies of Arizona winegrowing, and making the decisions necessary to bring Aridus' clients the highest quality wines possible. She’s glad to be working at a smaller scale that allows for close contact with customers, growers and grapes alike.

JAMES HALL - FOUNDER-WINEMAKER, PATZ & HALL

Patz & Hall was founded in 1988 by four talented individuals - Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses and Heather Patz. Together, they have turned Patz & Hall into one of California's most highly regarded wineries, with a celebrated portfolio of single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.

PARTNERS
The seeds for Patz & Hall were planted in the 1980s when assistant winemaker James Hall and national sales manager Donald Patz struck up a close friendship while working together at Flora Springs Winery and Vineyards. The two discovered a mutual enthusiasm for a rich and compelling style of wine made by applying traditional winemaking techniques to fruit from elite, small vineyards. Inspired to combine their winemaking and sales talents, James and Donald joined with partners Anne Moses and Heather Patz, to establish Patz & Hall in 1988.

To achieve their goal of crafting exceptional limited-production wines, the four founders have each focused their specialized knowledge, expertise and daily attention to different areas of the winery's operations. This integrated, hands-on approach, along with a commitment to developing close personal relationships with a handful of California 's finest growers, has become the cornerstone of the winery's success—allowing Patz & Hall to continually realize the highest levels of quality and consistency.

11/27 ANDY NINER, NINER WINE ESTATES, DOUG FILIPPONI, ANCIENT PEAKS WINERY, PASO ROBLES CAB COLLECTIVE

ANDY NINER -  PRESIDENT, NINER WINE ESTATES

FAMILY OWNED & ESTATE GROWN
we are 100% estate grown and the integration of farming and winemaking is the foundation of everything we do.

We currently farm a total of 223 acres across three different vineyards in Paso Robles and Edna Valley, and make all our wine in our LEED Certified Winery at Heart Hill Vineyard.  We are known for our estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as our flagship blend Fog Catcher; however, we grow a wide range of varietals and specialize in small lot bottlings that we allocate primarily to our Wine Club Members.   After growing up on a farm in West Virginia, Richard Niner spent his career building small businesses across a wide variety of industries.  One of his business ventures brought him to Paso Robles in the early 1990s and he was immediately drawn to the potential of both the land and the people who lived here.  After a long search, Richard and Pam purchased their first vineyard, Bootjack Ranch, in 2001 and spent the next decade building a tasting room and winery, finding and planting two additional vineyards, and assembling the current team. In 2013 they retired and their son Andy took over the day-to-day management of the business.

WE LOVE WHERE WE LIVE AND WHAT WE DO
We are passionate about sharing our wines with our customers in every aspect of any experience. The Central Coast of California is truly a spectacular place, and we host winery tours, seasonally inspired lunch service and a variety of fun and creative dinners designed to showcase it.  We believe that good people are the key to a memorable experience, so all our events are designed to be interactive and educational. Our Chef might decide to teach you how to shuck fresh oysters during a class; our Winemaker may lead a blending seminar with his favorite barrels; our Vineyard Manager might take you to the top of Heart Hill to geek out about rootstock. Regardless, our goal is to have guests walk away loving this place as much as we do.

THE RESTAURANT
experience great dining in wine country
lunch served thursday-sunday from 12-3pm.

Since opening our restaurant doors in early 2014, we have grown to be a family, winery, community and garden that are obsessive about ingredient sourcing. We know the farmers, butchers and artisans that we choose to partner with and our open-kitchen lunch service shows our goal of food-chain transparency. See our current lunch menu here & learn more about upcoming special events & dinners here.

DOUG FILIPPONI - CO-OWNER OF ANCIENT PEAKS WINERY AND THE PRESIDENT OF PASO ROBLES CAB COLLECTIVE

Ancient Peaks Winery represents the shared vision of three longtime local winegrowing and ranching families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms. Two generations are actively involved in the winery’s daily operations, all dedicated to producing extraordinary wines from Margarita Vineyard.

ORIGINS OF ANCIENT PEAKS
Rob Rossi acquired Santa Margarita Ranch in 1999. His friends Doug Filipponi and Karl Wittstrom soon joined him as partners in the ownership of the ranch, which they had all regarded as a special property for many years. That same year, the Robert Mondavi family planted Margarita Vineyard on the ranch under a lease agreement (click here for more background on the Mondavi connection).

In 2005, the three families acquired ownership and control of Margarita Vineyard. The obvious potential of the vineyard ultimately inspired the three families to become vintners as well as winegrowers. They knew that they could cherry-pick their favorite blocks and make distinctive wines with a strong sense of place.

The name Ancient Peaks was chosen to honor the towering Santa Lucia Mountains that border Margarita Vineyard. These peaks define the land’s complex geology and regulate the vineyard’s climate, ultimately shaping the character of the wines.

A RICH VITICULTURAL HISTORY
Santa Margarita Ranch enjoys a long and illustrious cultural pedigree, beginning with the Chumash and Salinan Indians more than 10,000 years ago. In the 1770s, the ranch became part of Father Junipero Serra’s famed Mission trail

Grapes were first planted at the ranch by Franciscan missionaries in 1780. Today, Santa Margarita Ranch remains one of California’s oldest continuously operated cattle ranches.

We are proud to be stewards of the ranch’s winemaking tradition and its legacy of early California rancho hospitality.

11/20 DAVID HUNT, HUNT CELLARS, DANIEL DAOU, DAOU VINEYARDS AND WINERY

DAVID HUNT – OWNER & WINEMAKER, HUNT CELLARS

It started over 20 years ago as a fantasy: living on a lush beautiful vineyard, producing your own style of favorite premium varietal wines that are well received and appreciated by those who have discovered the wines and shared them amongst friends.

Now, drive along the scenic Highway 46 West, about three miles west of the 101 Fwy at Oakdale Road, you will find this dream has become reality for David Hunt, Winemaker and owner of Hunt Cellars, a winery committed to producing “Memorable Wines”. We believe that great wines leave indelible impressions when poured with wonderful meals and great friends and scintillating conversations. Hunt Cellars was founded on the philosophy of producing wines that you will look forward to simply sipping by a cozy fireplace or pairing with your favorite meals to enhance that special event or moment in time.

How It Began
When The Hunt Family decided to pursue their dream they were uncertain where they would choose to build their vineyard. The Hunts spent exhaustive days and weekends traveling to various premium wine regions from Oregon, Washington, and throughout the State of California. They finally narrowed their decision down to the Central coast to San Luis Obispo County. Paso Robles was selected because of its rich diversity in soils, superb growing climate and unique styles of wine making along with the spirit of graciousness and traditional American values.

Eventually after looking at numerous parcels of vineyard potential property, they settled on uniquely beautiful property containing over 550 acres on Highway 41 in Creston. This unique property met their criteria in topography, soil composition and unparralled beauty. Within the 550 acres there are four terrior’s with varying elevations containing soil composites that mirror the great wine regions of the world. They were convinced that they could grow wonderful exciting intense fruit here on this property.

Destiny Hunt
The Hunt Family decided to name their vineyard, “Destiny Vineyards,” in honor of their new baby girl they named Destiny who was born in 1996. Just ask Destiny who has the best wines today and she will certainly tell you.

Destiny Vineyard’s first planting consisted of: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Syrah, Cab Franc, Viognier and Zinfandel. The Hunts decided to build a tasting room for their premium wines, which opened in October of 1999.

In 1997 they began producing their first releases of memorable wines… Experience has taught Hunts that in order to make great wines you must simply have the best fruit. At Hunt Cellars, we believe passion, hard work and never giving up until we have put together all the components and structure that will give our wine the varietal character, flavor and velvet finish that will become a trademark of our wines.

DANIEL DAOU - WINEMAKER AND CO-PROPRIETOR, DAOU VINEYARDS AND WINERY

THE VISION
Two Brothers: One Dream
Daniel and Georges Daou are committed to producing collectible, world-class Bordeaux style wines to rival those of the most respected appellations in the world.

Their appreciation for quality wine was nurtured throughout childhood, in France, where their father enjoyed good wine with every meal. Daniel and Georges came to appreciate great wines as young adults, and their passion for the fruits of the vine has grown stronger with every passing year.

OUR STORY:
In the golden, oak-studded hills of Paso Robles’ acclaimed west side, not far from William Randolph Hearst’s magnificent castle, there is a man with a Homeric vision. His name is Daniel Daou and he is devoting his life and every imaginable resource to creating, first and foremost, a Cabernet Sauvignon that rivals the very best in the world. Gracefully perched atop a stunning promontory at 2,200 feet, the DAOU Spanish Colonial style winery is embraced by a tangible serenity. Hawks wheel and bank while the all-day sun caresses close planted rows of lush, emerald green vines. The 100 percent calcareous soil makes no sound as it parses out nourishment and only a gentle breeze flows up through the Templeton Gap from the Pacific Ocean. The quiet is bewitching; you want to lay down roots here, just as the seven-year-old vines have done. But the sense of peace belies the serious industry at work on this 212 acre estate. No effort is spared to create the luscious varietals and blends that flow from this limited production winery. This kind of synergy happens rarely: superlative climate and terroir, super intensive vineyard culture, and cutting edge viticultural practice. You’re more likely to find it in Bordeaux than Central California. Coupled with the infectious passion and gracious, family style hospitality of the Daou brothers, Georges and Daniel, the result is pure magic. The kind of magic that comes in a bottle.

MORGEN MCLAUGHLIN - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WILLAMETTE VALLEY WINERIES ASSOCIATION

WINE REGION OF THE YEAR
Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded Oregon’s Willamette Valley as its 2016 Wine Region of the Year for the annual Wine Star Awards. Meet some of Oregon’s colorful characters and learn why our region has become the home of New World Pinot noir! The award was presented at the Wine Star Awards dinner in Miami on January 30, 2017.

ABOUT THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY
The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s leading wine region, has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 500 wineries. It is recognized as one of the premier Pinot noir producing areas in the world. The Willamette Valley is a huge and varied appellation that includes six sub-appellations: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton.

Buffered from Pacific storms on the west by the Coast Range, the valley follows the Willamette River north to south for more than a hundred miles from the Columbia River near Portland to just south of Eugene. To the east, the Cascade Range draws the boundary between the Willamette Valley’s misty, cool climate and the drier, more extreme climate of eastern Oregon.

At its widest point, this long, broad valley spans sixty miles. Overall, the climate boasts a long, gentle growing season – warm summers with cool evenings; bursts of Indian summer into fall; mild winters followed by long springs. In ideal years the maritime climate provides the best conditions possible for growing the cool-climate grape variety for which Oregon is best known: Pinot noir. In lesser years, fall weather can be tricky, causing winemakers to pull their hair. In this matter the Willamette Valley compares favorably with the Burgundy and Alsace regions of France. And, like it or not, the often finicky Willamette Valley climate is the promised land for Pinot noir in America. Wineries also produce Pinot gris, Pinot blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Melon, Gewürztraminer, sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc and some Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot among other lesser-known varieties.

The Willamette Valley wineries are a popular tourist destination, with the area boasting a luxury destination resort, several high-end inns and many delightful bed & breakfasts. The valley also offers a long list of fine dining restaurants. An additional advantage for the wine tourist is the proximity of the wineries to Portland. From Portland, tourists can visit the Willamette Valley winery of their choice in anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours.

11/06 IAN BLACKBURN, WINE LA, MIKE SULLIVAN, BENOVIA

MIKE SULLIVAN - CO-OWNER AND WINEMAKER, BENOVIA

Ben Dewane and Novian Anderson never met, yet they raised their children with similar old-fashioned values. Hard work brings its own rewards, they would say. Be the best at what you do. Surround yourself with good people, and let them get to work. And never, ever produce anything that wouldn't make you proud. With such similar family backgrounds, it's no wonder Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane would eventually find each other and marry. Together, they began a journey that led them to establish a winery that would make them, and their fathers, proud -- proud enough that the Benovia name pays homage to Ben and Novian.

Their journey also inspired Joe and Mary to assemble the best possible team of respected winemaking professionals. They partnered with Mike Sullivan, one of northern California's top winemakers, and someone who shares their passions for quality. With Mike as co-owner and winemaker, they brought in more depth to the winery operations, by hiring Chris Kangas as vineyard manager and Bob Cooley as the VP of Sales and Marketing. All good people who together make an even better team.

"At Benovia, our team is an extension of an extraordinary family," says Joe, "a family that eats, drinks, and breathes a lifelong passion for wine."

That passion led to the purchase of the renowned Cohn Vineyard atop a mountain near Healdsburg, where the couple lives, and led to a new winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley. The journey will continue with an exciting new Pinot Noir vineyard near Freestone, and the Martaella ranch (named after Joe and Mary's mothers), surrounding the winery itself.

Joe and Mary have invested in all the right things to make Benovia flourish-vineyards with unique terroir and a well equipped winery. But their most important investment is people.

"We see these people as the soul of Benovia," says Joe. "Mary and I trust in their passion and in what they bring to the wine. They expect a lot of themselves, and they expect it from each other. We like to call them 'Benovians.' I think our fathers would be proud of them."

10/30 KEVIN SASS, HALTER RANCH IN PASO ROBLES, MASTER SOMMELIER BRAHM CALLAHAN, HIMMEL HOSPITALITY GROUP

KEVIN SASS - WINEMAKER, HALTER RANCH IN PASO ROBLES

WELCOME TO HALTER RANCH
Historic Halter Ranch is a vineyard and winery located in the heart of the Paso Robles' Westside Adelaida District. California’s Central Coast Wine Country has ideal conditions for growing superior wine grapes and producing world-class wines. The 100% estate-grown wines are sustainably farmed on westside limestone soils. Tradition and innovation mix at Halter Ranch to produce Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines of the highest quality.

RANCH HISTORY
The history of Halter Ranch Vineyard dates to the 1880′s, when the ranch was part of a 3,600-acre holding owned by businessman Edwin Smith. Born in New Jersey, Smith had been a wholesale butcher in San Francisco, but migrated to the Adelaida area west of Paso Robles in 1874. In 1881, Smith acquired what was to become Halter Ranch and built a grand Victorian farmhouse on the property. He became a dealer in farm produce and livestock, and also invested heavily in silver mining. A horse racing enthusiast, Smith kept a private box at Tanforan Race Track and a stable of thoroughbreds on his estate.

In 1885, Smith’s mansion burned to the ground, but he immediately rebuilt it, enjoying another dozen years of prosperity before his business empire floundered. In the early 1900s, the estate was broken up. In 1943 1200 acres were purchased by the MacGillivray family, who farmed it for the next 50-plus years, introducing the first grapevines in 1996. The beautiful Victorian farmhouse Smith built in 1885 is a still the cornerstone of the Adelaida District and remains a Paso Robles landmark.

In June, 2000, Hansjörg Wyss purchased 900 acres of the ranch, renovated Smith’s historic farmhouse, and began enlarging the vineyard to its present 280 acres. Born and raised in Switzerland, Hansjörg believes Paso Robles is the best place in California to pursue his dream of producing world-class grapes and wines, a dream we are now busy realizing.

MASTER SOMMELIER BRAHM CALLAHAN - CORPORATE BEVERAGE DIRECTOR, HIMMEL HOSPITALITY GROUP

Brahm Callahan, 33, serves as Beverage Director of Himmel Hospitality Group and its three restaurants: Grill 23 & Bar, Post 390 and Harvest restaurant. Brahm is a Master Sommelier, one of only 157 professionals in North America who hold the title – the highest distinction available in the beverage service industry.  Raised in Western Massachusetts, Brahm had an early introduction to the wine world at age 17, when he learned the business side of the industry at The Shelburne Falls Wine Merchant, in Shelburne Falls, MA. Under the direction of mentor Paul-Thiery de la Blotier, it took just a short year before Brahm was put in charge of running wine tastings, managing the cellar, and working on dinners with winemakers and local restaurants.

While attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Brahm continued working at the Wine Merchant, and worked part time as a Wine Steward in many of Western Massachusetts’ top restaurants, also. After moving to Boston to pursue a Master’s Degree in Classics and Ancient History at Boston College, Brahm embraced the city’s wine community and began working as a sommelier while finishing his graduate work. During his time at some of Boston’s top-rated restaurants, including Excelsior and Rialto, Brahm developed an interest in small producers who make terroir-driven wines.  In 2009, Brahm joined Himmel Hospitality Group as part of the opening team for Post 390, an urban tavern in Boston featuring seasonally inspired menus. There, Brahm created a beverage program that included an expansive list of approachable and accessible wines, a selection of upwards of 40 craft beers and a competitive cocktail program.

In 2010, Brahm joined the team at Grill 23 & Bar as Wine Director, where he developed an award- winning list of more than 1,900 selections, focusing specifically on new cult producers while maintaining a balance that offers bottles for wine connoisseurs and novices alike.  In August 2015, Himmel Hospitality Group appointed Brahm as Beverage Director. 10/23 JEAN-FRANÇOIS PELLET, PEPPER BRIDGE WINERY, JEAN-CHARLES BOISSET, BOISSET COLLECTION

JEAN-FRANÇOIS PELLET - WINEMAKER, PARTNER, PEPPER BRIDGE WINERY - LAUNCHES HARVEST NO. 20

PHILOSOPHY
Attention to detail and functionality were the driving forces behind the design and construction of Pepper Bridge Winery. The three-level winery is built into a hill, set against the stunning backdrop of Pepper Bridge Vineyard. We are Certified Sustainable.

By utilizing innovative design and techniques, Pepper Bridge Winery has enhanced its quality and dedication to crafting premium wines. We built the first state-of-the-art, gravity-flow facility in Washington state, complete with subterranean caves. In a gravity-flow winery such as this, the grape pulp and juice are moved from the sorting table to the tanks to the barrels via gravity, rather than by pumps. This gentle treatment of the grapes prevents the shearing of seeds and the introduction of bitter tannins. Pumps are a choice rather than a constraint.  As a result, all of our wines have elegant textures and exquisite flavor profiles.

Winemaker Jean-François Pellet was also the consulting developer of a new optical sorter - yet another step in improving overall wine quality. You can view a video about this below.

ESTATE VINEYARDS
Our estate vineyards - Pepper Bridge, Seven Hills, and Les Collines - produce some of the most sought-after grapes in the state. Furthermore, these vineyards are leaders in the practice of sustainable agriculture. We are committed to environmental stewardship, implementing the following practices within the vineyards:

Applying compost tea to restore fungal and microbial components to the soil and feeding the tea with molasses. The compost tea contains living organisms and thus needs to be fed in order to stay alive!
Adding compost to the soil to restore the soil humus.

Using drip irrigation and buried soil-moisture monitors to ensure we do not waste water by irrigating below the roots of the vines.

Leaving some ground cover un-mowed to preserve the habitat for beneficial insects.
Planting wild roses and leaving blackberries where they exist to provide winter habitat for a parasitic wasp that attacks leafhoppers.

Utilizing organic products such as sulfur and liquid fish oil  to replace hard chemicals that control powdery mildew.

Winemaker Jean-François Pellet plays an active role in management of the vineyards and is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley's sustainable viticulture program, VINEA. The ultimate goal is to make quality wine and leave the soil healthier for future generations.

10/16 CAINE THOMPSON, TOOTH & NAIL WINERY, EMMA SWAIN, ST. SUPÉRY ESTATE VINEYARDS AND WINERY NEW TASTING SALON IN BEVERLY HILLS

CAINE THOMPSON - PRESIDENT,  TOOTH & NAIL WINERY

Rabble Wine Company creates Central Coast flavors with edgy and historical labels. The end result? A bottle of wine that truly over-delivers.

Our Central Coast winery showcases the best fruit from Paso Robles and the Santa Maria Valley. Our wine style exemplifies bright acidity, all while showcasing true varietal characteristics. Balance is the theme throughout, keeping alcohol levels below 15% and finely-tuning tannins to deliver a lush, full bodied wine with balanced acidity.

The labels all incorporate beautiful public domain art rooted in history: woodblock prints from the 1500s, illustrations by John James Audubon, and etchings from William Blake and John Boydell. Our labels, like our wines, are known to engage, evoke emotion, and spark conversation.

After drinking our wine, we hope you’ll see and experience the world a little differently.

TOOTH & NAIL WINERY: STORMING THE CASTLE
The Tooth & Nail Winery castle is where you’ll find the Rabble Wine Company tasting room and event venue. We add variety to the Paso Robles winery neighborhood both in wines and ambiance. Our French Chateau meets industrial tasting room is based in history but modern, much like our labels and our wines. We embrace the fun space that it is, while keeping wine quality at the core of everything we do.

A long growing season of warm days and cool evenings gives rise to vibrantly ripened fruit with dynamic flavor profiles that translate beautifully in your glass of Paso Robles wine.

40,000 vineyard acres & 40 winegrape varieties
Along your journey through Paso Robles Wine Country, take time to stroll the historic downtown to shop and dine. Boutique stores, wine country cuisine, and tasting rooms fill the blocks surrounding Paso Robles’ Downtown City Park. A scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting, Paso Robles’ downtown completes the picture of Paso Robles Wine Country.

In between you will find Cambria, Harmony, and Cayucos. All are within a short drive and worthy of your exploration. ELLIOTT DOLIN – PROPRIETOR, DOLIN MALIBU ESTATE VINEYARDS - HARVEST UPDATE/UPCOMING EVENTS

Inspired by a Chardonnay vineyard that Elliott and Lynn Dolin planted behind their Malibu home in 2006, Dolin Estate quickly emerged as one of the leading producers of estate Chardonnay in the Malibu Coast. Today its Malibu production has grown to include a second Chardonnay from Malibu Newton Canyon and two proprietary Malibu Coast red blends.

With the 2012 vintage, Dolin Estate broadened its scope beyond the boundaries of Malibu with a line of Central Coast Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The lineup includes a range of regional blends and single-vineyard designated bottles from revered sites such as Bien Nacido Vineyard, Solomon Hills Vineyard and John Sebastiano Vineyard.

The Dolin Malibu Coast Estate
The Dolin property sits at 400-ft. elevation just off Point Dume State Beach, where it benefits from a coastal microclimate with cool foggy mornings and large diurnal shifts. The site is laid out at a 45-degree eastward facing angle on the property’s sharply grated, south-oriented slope. The blend of Zuma volcanic soils and sandy loam has proven to be a perfect fit for Chardonnay.

Malibu Coast AVA
In 2011, wanting to offer a greater “sense of place” to the region, Elliott helped spearhead the establishment of the Malibu Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) alongside other Malibu vintners. The Malibu Coast AVA is 46 miles long and eight miles wide, with the majority situated within the Santa Monica National Recreational Area.

Winemaking:
Respected Central Coast winemaker Kirby Anderson brings decades of experience and takes a mindful approach to winemaking at every stage of production, from harvest to bottling, to make balanced wines with rich fruit, bright acidity and voluptuous texture. He makes monthly visits to Malibu during the growing season to meet with Elliott and monitor the development of the fruit. Elliott in turn frequently travels to the winery and vineyards in the Central Coast to offer direction and feedback on the winemaking.

10/02 STEPHEN DOOLEY, STEPHEN ROSS WINES, MIXOLOGIST JEN ACKRILL, SKY AND TOP OF WAIKIKI, HAWAII FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL

STEPHEN ROSS DOOLEY -  WINEMAKER AND FOUNDER, STEPHEN ROSS WINES

Small, family owned winery producing hand crafted wines on the South Central Coast of California.

Stephen Ross Wine Cellars is a premium family run winery located in the Edna Valley specializing in vineyard designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. Winemaker and owner Stephen Dooley has become one of the most respected vintners in the region crafting exceptional wines from some of the most prestigious vineyards in the region.

In 2001 he developed an estate vineyard planted exclusively to Pinot Noir in partnership with Talley Vineyards called Stone Corral Vineyard located in the Edna Valley. Home to several well-known vineyards, the Edna Valley exemplifies the characteristic microclimate and geologic features, which are the hallmark of the south central coast; an east-west valley, which mitigates its temperate climate with cooling, ocean-borne breezes. This provides a long growing season ideal for the development of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Petite Sirah grapes.

Dooley is currently producing wines from grapes grown at prestigious vineyards such as Bien Nacido Vineyard, Oliver’s Vineyard, Dante Dusi Vineyard, Wolff Vineyard and Thomann Station in addition to the estate Stone Corral Vineyard. Pinot Noir is also being sourced from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County. He also prodces Pinot Gris and Albarino.

The tasting room and winery is just a few miles from the vineyards of Edna Valley and located in the southern end of town in a mostly commercial area. Once inside the attractive tasting room the wines speak volumes for the commitment Steve has made to creating memorable wines.

The tasting room has an up to date modern look with a roomy tasting bar and small stand up tables made from oak barrels. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and ready to provide details of the wine making process and philosophy of the winemaker.

IAN BLACKBURN – FOUNDER/CO-WINEMAKER, BEEKEEPER CELLARS & OWNER/FOUNDER, WINE LA

ABOUT BEEKEEPER CELLARS
Beekeeper Cellars is the vision of best friends and co-winemakers Ian Blackburn and Clay Mauritson. The two collaborated after adventurous individual careers in the wine business, and at last, decided to work together on a project of their own.

Clay, a 7th generation grape grower, and his family found themselves the owners of a significant slice of the Rockpile Appellation, through an amazing set of historical land transactions. The Mauritson family realized the potential and parented the creation of the ROCKPILE AVA. In 1998, Ian and Clay climbed the hill and watched the Madrone Spring Vineyard get planted, while discussing the future of Rockpile and the dream it represented.

In 2008, Clay saw the fruits of his family's labor taking shape and came to Ian with a unique opportunity to source some of the Rockpile fruit. He told Ian in the difficult days of 2008, “now is the time to get in and build the business and have it take shape as the market improves, and to not wait until business is strong as you will have a hard time getting access to the right quality assets.” Ian took heed of Clay’s wise comment and said "When your best friend is Clay Mauritson and he offers Rockpile fruit and to assist with winemaking…... you make Zinfandel.”

In Los Angeles, Ian operates a specialty wine marketing organization known as wineLA and has pioneered wine education for the past 20 years (since 1995) through www.learnaboutwine.com and www.wineLA.com.  Beekeeper Cellars is also involved in Ian’s Masters of Wine Thesis project and provides him the winemaking training he requires to help pass the difficult Masters of Wine exam...an ongoing pursuit.

ABOUT WINELA
wineLA is about enhancing the wine culture of Los Angeles. To do so, wine must be in rhythm with fashion, music, food and other beverages.  It must take advantage of the geography, the architecture and the centers of interest. Los Angeles is a giant playground with an amazing array of venues, spaces, wine bars, restaurants, beaches, roof tops, gardens, and magical views. We want to be a part of the LA lifestyle, the wine lifestyle, and celebrate the people, the place and the passion.

wineLA will promote significant events, occasional classes, and tastings of merit. This is phase two of what we started 20 years ago at LearnAboutWine.com - America’s first wine education website and first in wine event creation. LearnAboutWine will now evolve onto a digital platform; the transformation will take some time; so we will slowly rebrand our event efforts onto wineLA, reduce the number of activities we focus on, and elevate our efforts to focus on the next big thing… Doing what is best for the wine industry and the communities we serve.  Edicts:  innovate, evolve and excite.

We thank you for joining our newsletter, we will be sending fewer emails and packing them with amazing content. We want to be your wine content provider and would love to hear about your favorite places, your music, your locations - we want to be under the influence of what ignites your passion for Los Angeles.

08/28 PETER MONDAVI JR., CHARLES KRUG WINERY, FRED SCHERRER, SCHERRER WINERY

PETER MONDAVI JR. – CO-PROPRIETOR, CHARLES KRUG WINERY

Now under the guidance of Peter Mondavi Sr., the Charles Krug Winery honors its roots while forging ahead to the future. From the Wild West to the twenty-first century, relatively crude beginnings gave way to the finest form of winemaking.

Founded in 1861 by Charles Krug, the 27-year old Prussian immigrant came to America with little besides willpower and a willingness to work hard to build the cornerstone of the first winery in the Napa Valley. He became the major local winery figure of his era, greatly influencing Napa Valley's development as a world-renown wine producing region.

His leadership was said to be inspirational and his ideas innovative. Charles Krug introduced the cider press for winemaking, the first of which is still on display at the winery. He carefully selected rootstocks, varietals and vineyard sites - a novel concept in late 19th century America.

After his death in 1892, James Moffitt held the winery in proprietorship through Prohibition. By 1943, he found a pioneering spirit in Cesare Mondavi, an Italian immigrant with a passion for wine, and sold the winery to his family for $75,000.

At 60 years old, Cesare Mondavi spearheaded a dramatic renaissance in the decade that followed. Wine historian Charles Sullivan writes in his book, Napa Wine, “By the early 1950s it was irrefutable that the Valley's Big Four had been augmented by one - the Charles Krug Winery”.

Cesare died in 1959 leaving Rosa as President with sons Robert as General Manager and Peter as Vice President. In 1966, Robert moved south to Oakville and began construction of his own winery. Upon Rosa's death in 1976, Peter became President of the winery.

Peter's industry innovations from his studies at Stanford and Berkeley included revolutionary research on cold fermentation, enabling the production of exceptionally crisp, fruity white wines. His pioneering efforts to plant vineyards in the Carneros region with chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, cold sterile filtration techniques and aging wine in small French oak barrels contributed to his being named one of the twelve “Living Legends” in 1999 by the Napa Valley Vintners Association.

Above all else, Charles Krug Winery is a family winery. Peter Sr. and his sons Marc and Peter Jr. continue their dedication to producing the finest Bordeaux style wines in the Napa Valley. To achieve this, they initiated a nine-year, $22 million investment program completed in 2010. Over 400 of the winery's 850 prime acres in Napa Valley have been re-planted and state-of-the-art winemaking equipment is now in use.

THE WINERY AND WINEMAKING
“In the mid-1970’s, due to a normal teenage interest in alcoholic beverages, my family allowed me to make some wine from the family vineyard and beer at home (under adult supervision, of course). This led to a UC Davis degree as well as concurrent work at a local winery doing the dirtiest and most menial jobs imaginable. In the mid-1980’s good friends at Duxoup Wine Works (think Marx Brothers for the pronunciation) inspired me to try my hand at my own label so I negotiated cellar space in lieu of a raise by my then-current employer, Greenwood Ridge Vineyards in Anderson Valley (I got a raise anyway). Greenwood Ridge was supportive of my project and decided to have some Scherrer Zinfandel produced for their label as well. Unfortunately, I had a poor business plan and during the first year I realized I was not yet ready for this project. Greenwood Ridge continued to make a small amount of Scherrer Vineyard Zinfandel for many years.

Enter Dehlinger Winery in the late 1980’s. Tom Dehlinger was very supportive of my long-term plans and challenged me to develop a solid business plan, facilitating an important entry into my own project. In return, his winery received my heart and soul for a decade. The final key element in our getting started was from my parents. They allowed me to delay paying them for their fine grapes until we began getting cash flow from our wine sales. By 1997, we were ready to make the move to a facility of our own. In anticipation of this, we were able to add Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to supplement the Zinfandel we were producing, all from my father’s vineyard in Alexander Valley. Tom Dehlinger supported this transition of my focus, allowing me to produce these additional wines in his facility and we parted very amicably after that vintage.

And so after the harvest of 1997, I moved our operation to a corner of an apple packing shed-turned-winery, finally leasing the entire building. During this period, our production grew from just the three varietals from Scherrer Vineyard, to now typically a dozen wines, about half of which are Pinot Noir. Total production is now 4000 to 5000 cases. My good frieStefanie Salem is the Founder & CEO of the Newport Beach Wine & Food Festival. Salem takes her entrepreneurial and international business background combined with her insatiable love for all things food, wine and cooking to curate and lead all programming for each year’s event. Her 20 years of business experience, which includes living and working in foreign countries, collaborating with political leaders and leading projects with economic corporations, has played a key role in helping her secure high-profile sponsors, participants and partners to make the Festival a true world-class event.

Salem’s impressive career accomplishments have included: promoting foreign investment in emerging markets by working with Heads of State, Ministers and CEO’s of multinational and local corporations in the countries of Greece, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Nigeria. Salem also led editorial advertising in US News and World Report, Sunday Telegraph (UK) and USA Today. Subsequently, she was Founder and President of Hampton Court Publishing, London, which published “In God’s Time, the Building of a Democratic Nation”, focusing on the cultural, historical and political independence of Nigeria where she worked with President Obasanjo, Vice President Abubakar, all 36 Governors and Ministers. After founding the Newport Beach Wine & Food Festival in 2014, Salem was honored as one of the “Most Influential People of 2015” by Newport Beach Magazine. In that same year, the Festival was also touted as the “Top 5 Places to Travel to in October (World-wide)” by Forbes Travel.

Salem considers herself a “taste-bud traveler”, gaining much of her inspiration for the Festival by experiencing cultural cuisine throughout her international business travels, and today, traveling the world with her two sons, family and closest friends. Salem also enjoys frequenting restaurants around Orange County, wining and dining with her chef and master sommelier pals, cooking gourmet meals at home and never missing an episode of “Top Chef.”

Salem was born and raised in Southern California and earned her BA in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara in 1992.nd, Don Bliss helped me whenever I needed a hand (or a finger to dial 911 in the unlikely event of a forklift mistake) during the first years until he sold his fine vineyard and moved back to his native Texas in 2006. Since then, I have been able to impose on a handful of friends and local customers when I have needed help, but still continue to work at the winery pretty much alone most of the year. Judi, my wife, has handled administrative and compliance for the winery since 2002, keeping me out of trouble with bureaucrats and making sure we are able to conform with the complex and changing world of direct shipping and wholesaling laws, reports and fees.”

JEAN-CHARLES BOISSET - PROPRIETOR, RAYMOND VINEYARDS

RAYMOND VINEYARDS PURCHASES THE 55-ACRE  BARTOLUCCI-STICE VINEYARD IN ST. HELENA

Raymond Vineyards, and Boisset Collection, have purchased the 55-acre Bartolucci Vineyard off of Stice Lane in St. Helena. The vineyard is adjacent to Raymond’s existing Stice Vineyard, and has 47 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Following the philosophy of all of Boisset’s estate vineyards, the Bartolucci vineyard will be converted to certified Napa Green, certified organic and certified Biodynamic®   farming. The addition of another estate vineyard in St. Helena, in the heart of the upper Napa Valley near the Raymond winery, shows Boisset’s ongoing, long-term commitment to the region. The addition of the Bartolucci-Stice Vineyard follows the 2015 purchase of the Ticen Ranch on Highway 29, with 25 acres of Rutherford vineyards. Raymond Vineyards now comprises 380 acres in Napa Valley.

“We believe in Napa Valley, and we believe in the importance of a long-term vision of making fine wines with a deep commitment and respect to the most prestigious and high-quality terroir,” said Raymond Proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset. “The addition of this phenomenal site in St. Helena from a great Napa family strengthens Raymond and ensures continuity and respect of the Bartolucci’s family legacy.”

The Bartoluccis are a multi-generational Napa Valley farming family that sought another owner to steward their vineyards for generations to come. They found in Boisset a like-minded commitment to family farming that will respect and enhance the quality of the site. The Bartolucci family has been farming in Napa Valley for four generations, starting in the 1920s, while Raymond celebrates a five generation family legacy of winemaking dating to the earliest foundations of the Napa Valley. The Bartolucci-Stice vineyard was originally planted in 1976, just two years after the first harvest of Raymond Vineyards in 1974.

With this year’s release of its 2014 Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Raymond is celebrating 40 years of winemaking in Napa Valley since its first vintage in 1974. “We believe that Raymond, today, is characterizing a new style of Napa Valley wine with elegance, finesse, charisma, eloquence and power,” said Boisset.

Since purchasing Raymond in 2009, Boisset has infused the winery with energy, innovation, passion and dynamism while respecting and celebrating its family heritage, and deepening the winery’s commitment to Napa Valley vineyards and farming. Raymond Winemaker Stephanie Putnam, along with Consulting Winemaker Philippe Melka, makes Cabernet Sauvignon from 13 of Napa’s 16 sub-AVAs in order to highlight and express the incredible diversity of the valley and the winery’s dedication to terroir. Under Boisset’s vision, Raymond has been named Sunset magazine’s “Best Tasting Room – Experience Beyond Tasting” in 2011; the 2012 American Winery of the Year and the 2016 Wine and Culture Wine Star by Wine Enthusiast ; the “Best Unique Tasting Experience” by CellarPass; "Best of the Bay – Best Wine Tasting Room, Napa" by the North Bay Bohemian; and named to Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2013 for its Generations Cabernet Sauvignon.
