Tim travels the world for his work and lives with his family in San Francisco.

Michael Jordan

Not many people live, breathe and know food and wine like Michael Jordan. His passion started early on when he watched his dad run the family restaurant, Matteo’s and continues to fuel his career. After a long stint as General Manager at the Disneyland Resort’s Napa Rose Restaurant, Master Sommelier, Jordan decided to embark on a whole new set of adventures in the world of wine.

Mike is the sommelier for the people, when he brings his passion for wine to the radio. The weekly, What’s Cookin’ on Wine show is carried in 11 million homes nationally on broadcast radio, cable television and the Internet and features the latest happenings in the wine world. “I love doing the show,” said Jordan. We get to interview wine royalty and tell the world about delicious wines and great values. The show isn't like other programs, it’s fun, informative and reaches a broad spectrum of people that like things that taste good without getting too stuffy. I mean come on; wine is just fermented grape juice.”

In 2002, the California Restaurant Writers Association (CRWA), a journalist organization, named Jordan “2001 Sommelier of the Year”, the Southern California Restaurant Writers (SCRW) voted him “2002 Sommelier of the Year” and the Cordon du Vin World Society named him “2004 USA Sommelier of the Year.” In 2006 Orange Coast Magazine named Michael “Restaurant Professional of the Year 2006” and also “General Manager of the Year 2006.” Mike and his wife Theresa are celebrating the inaugural release from their new venture,Word Vineyards. Word’s 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is bottled at Williams Seylem winery in the Russian River Valley, while the 2007 Pinot Noir is bottled at Ambullneo Vineyards in Santa Maria, CA. These artisan wines were handcrafted with love and care by the Jordan’s who selected the best fruit in California to make these well balanced wines.

1/17 Winemaker Louis Lucas

1/17 Winemaker Louis Lucas Is our Special Guest!

Originally from the Central Valley of California, Louis Lucas is one of California's premier grape growers. He literally grew up in the business. His father, son of Croatian immigrants, was a leading table grape grower in California for decades. Louis is best described as an innovator and a master at utilizing a variety growing practices and techniques. His vast knowledge and viticulture expertise span over 35 years, making him a sought after speaker, consultant, and advisor.

Louis has sold wine grapes to many wineries over the years including: Sebastiani, Korbel, Chateau Montelena, ZD, Wente Brothers, Ridge, Callaway, Bargetto, Kendall-Jackson, Robert Mondavi, Steele, Rusack, Fess Parker, Sunstone, Dan Gehrs, Austin Cellars, Foxen, Sanford, Viansa, Fiddlehead, McKeon-Phillips, Rideau and Bonny Doon.

In 1963, Louis graduated from Notre Dame University with a degree in Finance & Business Economics. Aside from his studies, Louis excelled in track and made his best attempt at Irish football. After four cold Indiana winters, Louis headed back to California to join the family's table grape, wine grape, and almond business. Several years later, he embarked on a new venture, one that would mark him as a pioneer in the California Central Coast's wine industry. In 1970, he formed Tepusquet Vineyards with his brother George and partner Alfred Gagnon to become one of the first commercial wine grape growers in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.

In the early 1970’s, he worked with Jack Niven to form Edna Valley Vineyards and expanded Tepusquet to the Shandon region of Paso Robles. It was during these years where Louis tested all of the growing theories of the past and created some of his own. He spent several summers touring the finest wine regions of France, Italy, Spain and Germany studying their methods and systems. His conclusion was simple, as he states, " The best decision I ever made in the early 70’s was going against conventional wisdom by planting more vines per acre, adapting trellis systems to fit specific varieties, and instituting suckering, hedging, thinning and leaf removal programs. I had learned this from growing table grapes with my Father, and my travels in Europe confirmed these techniques were essential to growing quality wine grapes."

As the 1980's approached, a shift began to take place in the wine industry as a whole. Johannisburg Riesling had been the primary white, but Chardonnay was well on it's was to replacing it. Louis adjusted to this shift and converted most of his vineyards from Cabernet, Merlot, and Gamay Beaujolais to Chardonnay (only keeping the Pinot Noir). He also planted another vineyard in the Los Alamos Valley of Santa Barbara County. There he instituted the 'Geneva Double Curtain' trellis system for his Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc. “This system [Geneva Double Curtain] produces a stronger more massive vine, elevating it off the ground with a large open canopy promoting greater production, quality, and health of the vine in general."

Louis’ current venture, Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards (L&L), has once again placed him at the top of his class. In 1996, he joined forces with retired Judge Royce Lewellen, with two of his existing vineyards, and together, they acquired several premium wine producing properties. These vineyards are located in the three principal wine grape growing regions of Santa Barbara County: the Santa Maria Valley, the Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Ynez Valley, allowing them to utilize the 3 different climate zones that are unique to Santa Barbara's County's coastal climate. L&L vineyards experience warm days and cool nights with long, gentle growing seasons for their over 400 acres and 24 varieties of grapes. L&L is now in the process of planning a winery and tasting room facility in the Los Alamos Valley. In Louis’s own words: "Growing great wine grapes requires a great deal of work. It is a true labor of caring to find a balance between the soil, the vine and the climate. All of these things must occur at the right time and are critical for vine maturity, resulting in real quality yields."

Never too far away from his vines, Louis, his wife Jill and their two daughters live in Solvang, California overlooking one of their beautiful vineyards.

1/10-Jim Fioleck, Matt Young

Jim Fioleck - Exec Dir - Santa Barbara County Vintners Assoc

In Santa Barbara County, the east-west orientation of the coastal mountains forms valleys opening directly to the Pacific Ocean. This unique topography allows the flow of fog and ocean breezes to shape distinct microclimates, perfect for the cultivation of classic grape varietals and world class wines. The 50 miles stretch from Point Conception to Rincon constitutes the longest east-west traverse of shoreline from Alaska to Cape Horn. Here, the Santa Ynez and San Rafael Mountains form a unique coastal range - the inland flow of fog and ocean breezes make the region one of the coolest viticultural areas in California. This means that the fruit has an unusually long "hang time" on the vine, allowing it to fully develop the acids, flavors and tannins needed to produce wines of distinctive character. Within Santa Barbara County there are several distinct winegrowing areas; there are four official appellations: Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, and Sta. Rita Hills. There are also several regions within the county that produce distinctive wines - these include the Los Alamos Valley region, between the Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley appellations, Ballard Canyon, the Los Olivos District and the Santa Maria Bench. Slightly less than half of the grapes grown in Santa Barbara County are used by local vintners, with the balance are exported to wineries outside the area.

Matthew Richard Young (born August 9, 1958) is a former American Major League baseball player. Young played for a variety of teams over his career, and is best known for his unofficial no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians while a member of the Boston Red Sox. Young would pitch for the Red Sox for two seasons before being released days before the start of the 1993 season. He became part of baseball history during his tenure with the Red Sox. On April 12, 1992, Young faced the Cleveland Indians in the first game of a doubleheader, allowed two runs on seven walks and an error by shortstop Luis Rivera en route to the fourth no-hitter by a losing pitcher. On that day Roger Clemens pitched a two-hit shutout in the second game of the double header, giving Young and Clemens the Major League Baseball record for the least number of hits (2) allowed in a doubleheader.

1/3 - Bill Brinton , Terry Culton,

William W. Brinton - Proprietor  -  Charles Creek Vineyard
Bill Brinton resides in Sonoma, but his roots are deep in the Midwest. Midwesterners are known for strong American values, respect for family and institutions, and the ability to create and recognize value in products.  Bill is a direct descendent of a true pioneer, John Deere. His direct family was at the helm of Deere until its recent transition to a public company. Deere created the self-scouring steel plow, an invention that revolutionized the agricultural world. It is this spirit of innovation and tradition that Bill brings to the company he founded, Charles Creek Vineyard. Charles Creek is named after his son Charley and his grandfather, Charles Deere Wiman.  Ten years prior to the start of Charles Creek Vineyard, Bill used this same dedication to create new and innovative beverages. In 1993, Bill, a graduate of the Columbia University MBA program, established a natural products and nutritional beverage firm, The Wiman Beverage Company. This company was sold to a larger firm in 2000.  Bill enjoys vineyard selection and development, as well as the critical evaluation and blending of the juice from grapes into wine. The wines are styled to pair wonderfully with a wide variety of fresh foods, and his vision is to create wines that could be sold for $30 to $75 per bottle, but that provide an exceptional value in the $20 to $25 price range. Value and integrity are the cornerstone of Midwestern values, and the basis upon which Charles Creek Vineyard was founded.

Terry Culton - Winemaker - Adelaida Cellars
For three-and-a-half years prior to Adelaida, Culton was assistant winemaker at the esteemed Calera Wine Company in San Benito County, working with Josh Jensen who is revered by his peers and wine aficionados for his complex and age-worthy Pinot Noirs. Jensen, whose winery and vineyards are near Hollister, is credited as "one of the leaders for the emergence of Pinot Noir," according to "The Connoisseurs' Handbook," written by Norman Roby and Charles E. Olken. Working at Calera is like studying at the University of Pinot Noir, if there was such a place, and not a bad place to be when you're an aspiring winemaker--until you're ready to graduate. "I was ready for total creative freedom," Culton admits. "Calera was a great place to learn, but the opportunity to work with HMR and Viking vineyards was irresistible." Culton's first career wasn't in the wine industry, but he became interested in wine in 1989 when a serendipitous visit to a winery changed the course of his life. A psychology graduate from Humboldt State University, his first career was in social services. The job sent him to the tiny town of Philo, near Mendocino, where he called on an old friend, Bob Nye, who was working at Scharffenberger Winery in Anderson Valley. Given a tour of the winery, famed for its excellent sparkling wines while under the direction of its founder John Scharffenberger, Culton was fascinated as he watched the bustling production scene in the wine cellar. Although he entertained the idea of changing careers, it wasn't until he and his wife Kathleen moved to Paso Robles in 1991 so she could attend Cal Poly, that Culton sought his first job at a winery.  He worked his first harvest that Fall at Creston Manor, and from there moved to Wild Horse where he found owner Ken Volk a generous and willing mentor. Culton was given responsibility as cellar master at Wild Horse, which provided him the opportunity to work with Pinot Noir Volk purchased from the fabled HMR Vineyard. Convinced he'd made the right career move, Culton attended extension classes in enology at UC Davis.  He returned to Mendocino where he became cellar master at Edmeades Winery, apioneer in Anderson Valley known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. His next move was to Oregon working at Willamette Valley Winery. One of the larger wineries in that state, they produce many varietals, but in Oregon, Pinot Noir reigns. Culton's experiences provided him with insight to the many faces of Pinot Noir, and earning him an enviable position at Calera.  After 13 years of working with many styles and varietals, Culton clearly is happy to be back in Paso Robles among his old friends: "Where else can you call a potential competitor for help and pick each others brains when a problem occurs?" he asks. "When it comes time to do your own thing, you use a little of what you liked best at each winery to develop your style." Culton is making Adelaida a winery that connoisseurs are watching.
